Surf School’s an off-the-beaten-path, optionally all-inclusive, week-long surf academy for everyone from beginners to experts in a tiny beachside town called Nosara in Costa Rica, with predictably rideable waves on a pristine, warm-water, nature-preserve beach accessible either via a dirt road or through a jungle path that unexpectedly ends at a sandy graveyard, which is presumably where Sandy Alomar, Jr. rockets baseballs at you from a catcher’s stance until you die! Lessons happen for an hour-plus twice a day, starting with basics (paddling, standing, etc.) on the beach and continuing in the water, first getting you comfortable on the whitewater before eventually heading out behind the break, with a uniquely focused instruction style that’s got no more than three students per instructor, who include both locals and expats with names like Ronaldo, Rolo, and.. Owen (you’ll never guess which is which!). To break up the sessions, there’s a full-serve restaurant and bar serving up local microbrews and specialty cocktails (fine, caipirinhas), as well as optional activities that range from late-night excursions to check out a slew of monstrous sea turtles emerge from the water to dig ditches and lay eggs on the beach, to back-country ATV explorations, to a forest-canopy zipline, to partying in the local club “Bananas”.

Packages for all levels of surfers, from the very beginner to the advanced on one of Costa Rica’s best surfing beaches.

Next, hike the Escalonia Cloud Forest Trail, home to epiphytes, orchids, ferns and tropical hummingbirds. Cloud forests are like rainforests, but with less rain and more humidity. Lunch. Then, a short walking tour through a small family coffee farm. Enjoy fresh Costa Rican coffee. Then, see San José’s Plaza de la Cultura, Central Park and the National Theatre. Day 3 – Butterfly Garden, Tortuguero Park

Scenic morning drive through Braulio Carrillo Park. Look for cascading waterfalls. Visit a butterfly garden. Enjoy lunch. See a banana plantation. Then, cruise through rivers and canals to the 47,000 acre Tortuguero National Park. Tortuguero is home to more than 300 species of birds. Day 4 – Tortuguero Park, Canal Cruise

Next, visit the Green Turtle Research Station. Learn about efforts to protect the turtles. Walk along the Atlantic turtle nesting beaches with a naturalist guide. Next, to Tortuguero village. Day 6 – Caño Negro, Hot Springs, Arenal

Head north this morning, passing through sugar cane, teak and orange plantations. Then, cruise on the Rio Frio which runs through the world famous Caño Negro wildlife refuge, home to many migratory birds found nowhere else in Costa Rica. Look for whistling ducks, roseate spoonbills, cormorants, anhingas, blue heron, and northern jacanas. Watch for caimans, crocodiles, spider monkeys, and web-footed, water-walking lizards. Lunch. Return to Fortuna. Then, enjoy a relaxing soak in the volcanic hot springs. Weather permitting, see nearby Arenal Volcanos softly glowing lava flow. Enjoy dinner. BLD

Day 7 – Hanging Bridges, Guanacaste

This morning enjoy an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the rainforest at the Hanging Bridges, rated one of Costa Ricas top tourist attractions.
